Internationally known violinist Sergey Girshenko was born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1953. Both his parents were musicians, and he studied at the Leningrad Art School for gifted children; he gave his first soloist recitals at the age of thirteen. He then attended the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with David Oistrakh and Dmitri Tsyganov. Since 2001 he has been the concertmaster of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (also known as the Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra). He has also been the concertmaster of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society. He has performed with famed musicians, including the pianist Sviatoslav Richter (with whom he also performed in many chamber music concerts), the violist Yuri Bashmet and the violinist Oleg Kagan. He started performing as a soloist at the major concert halls in Russia and elsewhere under the baton of famous conductors such as Evgeny Svetlanov, Mark Gorenstejn, Yuri Simonov, Alexander Lazarev, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Ashkenazi and Seiji Ozawa. Girshenko has appeared at many important music festivals, including those in Boston, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Schleswig-Holstein. As a conductor, he has led the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society, as well as the Italian chamber orchestra “Orcestra sinfonica siciliana”. Girshenko has taught at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow since 1986, and holds master classes in Germany, Italy, Spain and Brazil. In 1989 he received the Viotti d’Oro Award and in 2004 the title of People’s Artist of Russia.
