The former Hermes quartet, consisting of the two violinists Marcello Spina and Alessio Nicosia, the cellist Alessandro Longo and the violist Simone Paradiso, was among the few Italian quartets to be admitted to the Pro Quartet Foundation in Paris with honors in the last 30 years. In the French capital they followed the Masterclasses of Walter Levine (La Salle Quartet), Valentin Erben (Alban Berg Quartet), Heime Muller (Artemis Quartet) and Louis Fima (Arpeggione Quartet). In 2016 the violist Gaetano Adorno became a member of the group. The new quartet, now composed of the violinists Marcello Spina and Alessio Nicosia, the violist Gaetano Adorno and the cellist Alessandro Longo, takes the name of Aetna, obviously referring to the geographical area its members come from. In 2016, in occasion of one of its first concerts at Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, the critics reported: “Aetna, the taste of musical elegance… they highlighted the smallest details… they know how to master both rythm and melody… entwining the four different instrumental voices in a dialogue which was moving, engaging and elegant at the same time“ (from the daily newspaper “La Sicilia”).
